Ariel Schrag's Early Life

Ariel Schrag chose to allow her life from a young age to be read and seen through her graphic novels. She expresses her teenage years through her writing and how she grew into the person she is today.

Ariel was born in Berkeley, California in 1979 where she attended Berkeley High School. Schrag self-published her first comic series Awkward. She created this comic while in high school and it depicted her life events starting freshman year. Showcasing high school experience in all its awkward and questioning times in life, resulting in a very honest autobiographical graphic novel.

Through her graphic memoir we see at a young age Ariel was very interested in meeting new people, attending concerts, chemistry, drawing comics and developing crushes through her high school years. Schrag graduated from high school in 1998. She then graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in English in 2003.
